Football Comeback Falls Short at Plymouth State

Plymouth, NH - The Framingham State University football team trailed 21-0 in the third quarter before mounting a huge comeback pulling within one before ultimately falling 28-26 to Plymouth State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Clean Harbors Stadium. 

THE BASICS:

-Records: Framingham State (5-3, 5-2 MASCAC), Plymouth State (7-1, 6-1 MASCAC) 

- Location: Panther Field Plymouth, N.H. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams amassed 405 yards of total offense in the game including 354 yards passing, while limiting the Panthers to 269 yards of offense including just 48 yards passing. 

  • Michael Marcucella completed 35-of-46 pass attempts for 349 yards with three touchdowns. 

  • Mathias Fowler made 10 catches in the game for 129 yards and a score, while Alex Maia had four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.  

  • Ayden Ramirez added four catches for 42 yards and caught a touchdown. 

  • Blake Barron paced the defense with eight solo tackles with a sack and two for a loss, while Devine Johnson finished the game with five tackles, including one for a loss. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Panthers built a 21-0 lead with two touchdowns in the opening half and one to start the third quarter. 

  • The Rams got on the board with just under seven to play in the third on a 23-yard touchdown from Marcucella to Ramirez. 

  • The Rams opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back scores but missed the extra point and trailed 21-20 with 4:20 to go in the game.  Maia caught a four-yard touchdown, and Ransford Adri scored from one-yard out on the ground. 

  • The Panthers answered with a touchdown but missed the conversion and led 28-20 with 2:38 to go. 

  • The Rams drove down the field and pulled within two on a nine-yard TD from Marcucella to Fowler. The Rams went for two and failed to set up an onside kick recovered by Plymouth to secure the victory.
