Football Close Regular Season with 28-27 Comeback Victory over Worcester State – Rams Claim Share of MASCAC Title

Worcester, Mass. The Framingham State University football team drove eighty yards in the final 1:06 of the game for the game tying touchdown and go-ahead extra point as the Rams defeated Worcester State 28-27 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Coughlin Field. With the victory, the Rams finish the season 7-2 in league play and sit atop the league standings tied with Plymouth State and Anna Maria earning a share of the MASCAC Title.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • For the RamsMarcucella completed 21-of-40 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns with no pick.  

  • Mathias Fowler finished the game with eight catches for 72 yards and caught all three of Marcucella's touchdown throws. Adrian Sarrette finished the day with two catches for 49 yards including a huge 28-yard reception on the game's final drive. 

  • Tyrell Fuller and Blake Barron paced the Rams defense with 12 tackles apiece. Fuller added a tackle for a loss and a pair of pass breakups, while Barron recorded 2.5 tackles for a loss. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Lancers built a 21-0 lead before the Rams got on the board on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Macucella to Mathias Fowler with 5:51 on the clock in the second. 

  • The Lancers pushed the lead to 24-7 on a 32-yard field going in the opening minutes of the third quarter. 

  • The Rams answered with a pair of third quarter scores to pull with three, 24-21, with 3:08 to go in the third. Fowler caught his second touchdown of the game from Macucella eight yards out, and Devin Viera returned an interception 70 yards for a score. Ty Kelley converted both extra points. 

  • Worcester State added another field goal to start the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 27-21. 

  • The Lancers attempted a field goal with 1:06 left in the game, but the attempt sailed wide left giving the Rams the ball back on their own 20. 

  • Marcucella completed five passes including a 28-yard completion to move the ball down to the Lancer 27-yard line.  

  • After a penalty on the Rams moved the ball back to the 32, Marcucella threw an incompletion on first down and on second down with under five seconds remaining the Lancers were called for pass interference in the endzone giving the Rams on more play from the 17-yard line.  

  • On the final play of the game, Marcucella avoided the rush and completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Fowler as time expired, tying the game at 27-27. Kelley came on and converted the extra point, securing the victory for the Rams. 

  • By virtue of the MASCAC tiebreaker policy, the Rams will receive the league's automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Division III Football Tournament with the bracket announced on Sunday at 5 p.m.
