Ice Hockey Drops 7-2 Decision to UMass Dartmouth

Framingham, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth ice hockey team scored three goals in the first period en route to a 7-2 win over the host Framingham State University Rams in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action tonight at Loring Arena.  With the win, the Corsairs remain atop the MASCAC standings at 4-0-1 in conference and 7-1-1 overall, while the loss drops the Rams to 0-6 in the MASCAC and 0-8 overall.                

The Corsairs were led by junior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, Mass.) who picked up a hat trick in the game and scored what proved to be the game winner late in the first period.  Senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, Mass.) chipped in two goals for the Corsairs, while Mike Grzelcyk (Watertown, Mass.) and William Colclough (Naple, FL) added single goals.

The Rams were led by senior forward John Sheehan (Stoughton, Mass.) who picked up a goal and an assist, while sophomore Nick Calma (Simi Valley, CA) chipped in two helpers.  Freshman Eric Ward (Haverhill, Mass.) scored the Rams other goal in the game.

The Corsairs outshot the Rams 51-19 in the game and were 1 for 3 on power play opportunities, while the Rams were only 1 of 5. 

UMass Dartmouth scored three goals in the first period including the game winner by Owens to open up a 3-0 lead after one.  Sheehan cut the Rams deficit to 3-1 just 2:46 into the second period, but the Corsairs scored three goals in the next six minutes to take a commanding 6-1 lead.  The two teams traded goals in the final minutes of the second to reach the final margin of 7-2.

The Rams return to action on Saturday as they host Becker College at 7:40 p.m., while the Corsairs travel to Fitchburg State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
