Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Western Connecticut 19-14
Framingham, Mass. – Paced by 10 goals from sophomore Nicole Perrone (Brookfield, Conn.) the Western Connecticut State Unviersity women's lacrosse team defeated the Framingham State Rams 19-14 in a non-conference game this afternoon in Framingham. With the win the Colonials improve to 4-3 on the year, while the Rams fall to 1-3.
The Rams were led offensively by sophomore Louie Rijo (Salem, Mass.) who scored a team-high six goals to go along with an assist, while junior attack Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) added three goals and helper. Sophomore Chelsea Temple (Rutland, VT) and senior Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, Mass.) chipped in two goals apiece, while Heather Masse (Billerica, Mass.) added a single tally.
Perrone's led all scorers in the game with 11 points on her ten goals and an assist, while sophomore Devon Edwards (Islip, NY) added a pair of goals and four assists, all coming on Perrone tallies. Brianna Mitterando also added a pair of goals for the Colonials, while Lauren Poppe picked up three assists.
Western Connecticut opened up a 7-2 lead with nine minutes to go in the first half as Perrone scored four of the Colonials first seven goals. The Rams responded with four unanswered goals, including a pair from Rijo, to pull within one goal (7-6) with 4:15 remaining in the frame.
The Colonials answered with a pair of goals, both by Perrone, in the final 1:15 to take a 9-6 lead at the break.
Leading 12-10 with 17:26 left in the game, the Colonials ran off six straight goals including a pair from Mitterando to take a commanding 18-10 lead with 2:44 remaining.
However, the Rams would not go quietly as Kiley scored a pair of goals and Rijo converted a free position shot to pull the Rams within five (18-13) with just under a minute remaining. The Rams would not get any closer as Perrone scored her 10th of the day unassisted with 28 seconds remaining and Kiley and Rijo connected for the Rams final goal with 14 second left to reach the final margin of 19-14.
Sophomore Kelsey Turner (Billerica, Mass.) picked up the loss in the net for the Rams surrendering 19 goals with six saves, while Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY) picked up the win making 10 stops for the Colonials.
The Rams return to action on Saturday as they host Castleton at 1 p.m., while the Colonials host Keene State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
