Women's Soccer Grabs Third Seed in MASCAC Tournament
Westfield, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's soccer team has earned the third seed in the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championship Tournament after compiling a 5-2 conference record this season. Worcester State University has earned the top seed.
The tournament begins with a pair of quarterfinal games on Tuesday, November 4th. Fifth-seed Bridgewater State University travels to fourth-seed Salem State University at 6 pm, while third-seed Framingham State plays host to sixth-seed MCLA at 7 p.m.
The winner of the Bridgewater State/ Salem State game will play top seed Worcester State on Friday, November 7th at 7 p.m. in one of two semifinal contests. The winner of the other quarterfinal between Framingham State/MCLA will travel to second-seed Westfield State for a 7 p.m. start on Friday evening.
The winners of the semifinal games will then play Sunday, November 9th for the MASCAC title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
Finishing the season undefeated in league play, the Lancers claim the top seed and a bye into the semifinals. Alicia Macomber leads the team with 36 points on 15 goals and six assists. Goalie Jillian Witkowski is currently second in the MASCAC in goals allowed (14), goals against average (1.00) and save percentage (.833).
Landing the second seed in the tournament is Westfield State who closed out the regular season with a 5-1-1 record to earn the other bye into the semifinals. Sarah Sypek is the leading scorer for the Owls with 18 goals and eight assists for 44 points.
Framingham State is the third seed in the tournament after going 5-2 in league play. Senior Isabel DeSouza (Framingham, Mass.) is tied for first in the conference with 18 goals and has a team-high 41 points, while teammate and classmate Marisa Parent (Revere, Mass.) is second on the team with 16 goals and six assists for 38 points.
During the 2013 championship, Bridgewater State defeated Worcester State 3-1 to earn the MASCAC title and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
