Salem State Slips Past Volleyball 3-0

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University volleyball team was defeated this evening in straight sets, 3-0, by Salem State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Athletic Center.

  • In the first set, neither team held a lead larger than two until Salem State took a 24-21 lead on a kill by Brynn O'Neill.  The Rams rattled off the next two points on a Salem error and a kill from freshman Brandee Thomas (North Kingstown, RI) before Salem closed the set with a kill from O'Neill.
  • In the second set, Salem took an 18-9 lead before the Rams battled back to pull within two, 22-20.  The Vikings closed the set with three of the final four points including a service ace from O'Neill.
  • Framingham State took a 13-10 lead on a kill from junior Deirdre Fay (Cornwall, NY), but the Vikings rattled off an 11-0 run to take a 21-13 advantage.  The Rams countered with a 6-1 run of their own to pull within three at 22-19, but the Vikings were able to hold on for the victory.
  • Sophomore Brandey Rodriguez (Lawrence, Mass.) paced the Rams on the attack with a team-high 11 kills on 24 attempts to go along with four digs.  Thomas recorded eight kills in the match with five digs, while sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) added four kills, two aces and 10 defensive digs.
  • Senior Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) added 23 set assists and seven digs, while freshman Alyssa Cafarelli (Peoria, AZ) added a team-best 18 digs.
  • The Vikings were led by a match-best 15 kills on 35 attempts from O'Neill, who also added two aces and seven digs.  Emily Hennessey and Darcy McDowell chipped in with four kills apiece.
  • Morgan Adams recorded 24 set assists with 11 digs, while Samantha Chaisson paced the back row effort with a match-best 19 digs.  Adams and Hennessey recorded four service aces apiece for the Vikings, who had 11 as a team in the match.



The Rams travel to New England College on Saturday for a non-conference tri-match with Curry beginning at 10 a.m., while the Vikings face Lesley and Elms on Saturday.
