Overtime Interceptions and Touchdown Pass Propels Football to 46-40 Victory over Bridgewater State

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University football team received an interception from Amari Williams and a touchdown pass from Treyvon Fields to Alex Maia in the first overtime as the Rams defeated Bridgewater State 46-40 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Bowditch Field. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Rams got on the board on the first possession of the game on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Michael Marcucella to Maia. 

  • The Rams opened the second quarter with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Marcucella to Jaheim Daniels and led 14-0 with 11 minutes to go in the second. 

  • The Bears scored 21 unanswered points including a pair of scores off turnovers taking a 21-14 lead into the half. 

  • Daniels took the Rams first play from scrimmage in the second half and scampered 71-yards for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked and the Rams trailed 21-20 with 12 minutes to go in the third. 

  • Bridgewater State used a 40-yard field goal from Joey Naso to push the lead to 24-21, but Marcucella connected with Mathias Fowler for a 20-yard touchdown putting the Rams on top with 6:16 to play in the third.  

  • Naso added a 27-yard field goal in the final seconds of the third sending the game to the fourth tied 27-27. 

  • The Rams used a pair of touchdown passes from Fields to Ayden Ramirez in the fourth quarter to open a 40-27 lead with 2:52 on the clock. 

  • The Bears needed just one play to cut the deficit to 40-34 with 2:34 on the clock.  The Bears recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove for the game tying score. The extra point was wide right sending the game to overtime. 

  • The Rams won the toss and elected to play defense first in the overtime period and on a fourth and 22, Williams came up with an interception in the endzone giving the Rams a chance to secure the victory. 

  • The Rams moved the ball down to the 18-yard line and on third down, Fields connected with Maia for the game winning score. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams amassed 459 yards of total offense in the game including 275 yards passing, while the Bears accumulated 305 yards of offense and just 86 yards rushing. 

  • Marcucella finished the game 17-of-21 for 192 yards with three touchdowns and a pick, while Fields finished the game 8-of-9 for 83 yards and three scores. 

  • Daniels rushed for 154 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown, while also making four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown.  

  • Ramirez finished the game with eight catches for 77 yards and a pair of scores, while Maia made three catches for 48 yards and two touchdowns. 

  • Williams finished the game with six tackles, including five solo stops, three pass breakups and an interception in overtime. 

  • James Wilder and Nick Quintina added six tackles apiece, while Corey Barron finished with four and a pair of breakups.
