Westfield State Takes Two from Softball

Westfield, Mass. - The Framingham State University softball team dropped both games of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader to Westfield State by scores of 3-0 and 9-1 this afternoon at Sullivan Field. 

THE BASICS: 

-Scores:  Westfield State 3, Framingham State 0 
Westfield State 9, Framingham State 1 (6 Innings) 

- Records: Framingham State (19-9, 5-3), Westfield State (24-7, 6-1) 

- Location: Sullivan Field Westfield, Mass.    

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

Game 1: Westfield 3, Framingham 0 

  • In the opener, th game was scoreless through four innings as Framingham's Audrey Gauthier and Westfield's Katherine Canty were locked in a pitcher's duel.  

  • Canty had a perfect game going into the fourth inning until Ellie Etemad-Gilbertson singled for the Rams. Canty earned the victory in the circle by going seven shutout innings, scattering five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. 

  • Gauthier was equally impressive, keeping the Owls off the board until the fifth inning but suffered the loss.  Gauthier went six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. 

  • The Owls received a two-run home run from Sarah Hough and an RBI single from Christina Ciampa in the fifth to secure the victory. 

Game 2: Westfield 9, Framingham 1 (6 Innings) 

  • In game two, the Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Rams answered with an RBI single from Abigail Behirkis in the top of the second tying the game. 

  • The Owls took the lead for good with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. The Owls added a single run in the third and three in the fourth pushing the lead to 7-1. 

  • The Owls secured the run rule victory in the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. 

  • Julianna Chisholm took the loss for the Rams going 5.2 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. 

  • Etemad-Gilbertson went 2-for-2 in the game with a walk.

The Rams are back in action Monday afternoon when they host Salem State at 1 p.m.
