Softball Takes Game 1 in Extras Before Falling to Mass. Maritime in Game 2

Buzzards Bay, Mass. - The Framingham State University softball team took game one of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader 7-5 in eight innings over Mass. Maritime before the Bucs walked off with a 5-4 victory in game two this afternoon at Rollins Field.

- Records: Framingham State (23-11, 8-4), Mass. Maritime (18-16, 4-8)

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

Game 1: Framingham 7, MMA 5 (8 Innings) 

  • In the opener, the Rams and the Bucs each plated a pair of runs in the first inning before the Rams used an RBI single from Jocelyn Pepe to take a 3-2 lead in the third. 

  • The Bucs scored two in the bottom of the fifth taking a 4-3, but the Rams countered in the top of the sixth. Brooke Grassia plated a run with a single and Abigail Behrikis reached on an error giving the Rams a 5-4 lead. 

  • The Bucs used an RBI triple in the sixth tying the game and after neither team scored in the seventh the game went to extra innings. 

  • Grassia delivered a two homer for the Rams in the top of the inning and Audrey Gauthier retired the Bucs in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory. 

  • Gauthier earned the win going eight innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts. 

Game 2: MMA 5, Framingham 4 

  • In game two, the Rams took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Pepe plated a run when she reached on a fielder's choice and Behrikis drove in a run on a ground out. Eliza Carignan capped the inning with an RBI single. 

  • The Bucs got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the inning. 

  • The Rams extended the lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth, but the Bucs tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning. 

  • After the Rams were retired in the top of the seventh, the Bucs secured the victory scoring the deciding run in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch. 

  • Gauthier took the loss in game two tossing 1.2 innings of relief allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

The Rams are back in action Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Nichols at 3:30 p.m.
