Pilgrims Pull Away Late in 5-1 Win Over Women's Ice Hockey

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Framingham State women's ice hockey team fell 5-1 to New England College on Tuesday evening at the Ice House, as the Pilgrims scored three unanswered goals in the third period to break open a close game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A scoreless first period gave way to a back-and-forth second frame. Sophie Brien broke the ice at 13:00 of the second period with an unassisted even-strength goal — her second of the season — to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
  • The advantage was short-lived. Keira Gallacher answered for the Pilgrims just 3:18 later at 16:18, scoring off assists from Kate Devlin and Meadow Gilchrist to knot the game at 1-1. Jamie Blondin then gave New England College the lead for good with a power-play goal at 19:24, assisted by Gallacher, sending the Pilgrims into the second intermission up 2-1.
  • New England College put the game out of reach in the third period with three goals in a six-minute span. Kate Devlin made it 3-1 at 11:44, assisted by Gilchrist. Isabella Marzano then took over, scoring at 15:05 (assists: Gina Sciortino, Alexis Hornsby) and again at 17:41 (assists: Samantha Babbitt, Hornsby) to cap the scoring at 5-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • New England College outshot Framingham State 37-34 in a relatively even shot battle.
  • Framingham State goaltender Brigid Milligan made 32 saves in the loss.
  • New England College's Anna McGinty stopped 33 of 34 shots for the win.
  • Marzano led all scorers with two goals, while Gilchrist (2A) and Hornsby (2A) each posted multi-point games for the Pilgrims.
  • Brien's second-period goal accounted for the lone Rams tally.
  • Framingham State went 0-for-2 on the power play; New England College converted 1-of-3.
  • New England College won the faceoff battle 37-23.
