Men's Ice Hockey Edges Rivier 3-2

NASHUA, N.H. – The Framingham State men's hockey team held off a late rally to defeat Rivier 3-2 on Friday night at the Conway Arena, improving their conference record to 2-4-0.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Framingham State 3, Rivier 2
  • Records: Framingham State (5-10-0, 2-4-0), Rivier (1-15-1, 1-5-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first period remained scoreless despite Framingham State outshooting Rivier 16-9. The Rams failed to capitalize on a power play opportunity late in the period.
  • Framingham State broke through at 4:28 of the second period when Jeremy Zecher scored his third goal of the season at even strength, assisted by Luke Yubeta and Grig Kaagan.
  • The Rams extended their lead to 2-0 at 16:21 of the second period when Brent Scott netted a power-play goal, his fourth of the season, with assists from Sam Larkin and Robert Bernier.
  • Rivier responded early in the third period as Payton Kender scored just 42 seconds into the frame, assisted by Carter Poulin and Aaron Sawicki, cutting Framingham State's lead to 2-1.
  • Zecher delivered the game-winning goal at 16:11 of the third period with a short-handed, unassisted strike while the Rams were killing a penalty. The goal was his fourth of the season.
  • Rivier pulled to within one at 18:36 when Jacob Bodin scored on the power play with an extra attacker on the ice, assisted by Kender and Anthony Dalessio, but could not find the equalizer in the final 1:24.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Framingham State held a 36-32 advantage in shots on goal, with a 16-9 edge in the first period.
  • Owen Swanbon was stellar in goal for Framingham State, making 30 saves over 59:45 to earn the win.
  • Rivier's Mason Meyer stopped 33 shots in 54:13 of work before being pulled for an extra attacker late in the game.
  • Special teams were nearly even: Framingham State went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Rivier converted 1-of-4 opportunities.
  • Framingham State was assessed 7 penalties for 14 minutes, compared to Rivier's 7 penalties for 25 minutes. 
  • Faceoffs were tight, with Rivier winning 34 draws to Framingham State's 33.
  • Jeremy Zecher's two-goal performance led the Rams' offense.
