Assumption Holds Off Late Rams Rally, Defeat Men's Ice Hockey 7-6

WORCESTER, Mass. – Jonathan Surrette scored twice and Assumption held off a late Framingham State rally to win 7-6 in non-conference action Tuesday evening in Worcester.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • First Period: Assumption jumped out to a 4-2 lead in a back-and-forth opening frame. Ryan Decker scored just 1:37 into the game, and Brett Cunningham added a second goal at 4:16. Jonas Oesterle pulled the Rams within one on the power play at 7:21, and Nathan Gines tied it at 2-2 at 14:26. However, Surrette and Sean Donoghue scored late goals to give the Greyhounds a 4-2 advantage after one period.
  • Second Period: The Rams dominated the second frame, outshooting Assumption 27-8 and scoring three unanswered goals. Brent Scott converted on the power play at 2:38, Sam Larkin made it 4-4 at 6:06, and Scott Bugarin gave Framingham State its first lead at 5-4 with a goal at 12:32.
  • Third Period: Surrette tied the game at 5-5 at 8:06, and Jake Russell gave Assumption a 6-5 lead with a shorthanded goal at 14:31. Jake DiNapoli added an empty-net goal at 18:28 to make it 7-5. Devin Shepherd scored with 23 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 7-6, but the Rams ran out of time.

  • Robert Bernier: Recorded three assists to lead the Rams.
  • Sam Larkin: Added a goal and an assist while leading Framingham State with nine shots.

  • Team Stats: Framingham State outshot Assumption 57-44 but went just 2-for-4 on the power play. The Greyhounds were 0-for-1 with the extra skater.
